Deck & Fence Staining · Pierce & South King County

Deck and fence staining built for Northwest weather

Cleaned, brightened and sealed with a stain that stands up to Pacific Northwest rain and sun. Decks, railings, fences and gates.

A deck or fence in the South Sound takes the worst of both seasons — months of rain that grays the wood and raises the grain, then a few hard months of UV that bleaches it. Staining isn't just color; it's the seal that keeps water out of the boards so they don't cup, split and rot. We clean and brighten the wood first, let it dry to the right moisture level, make any board and fastener repairs, then apply a semi-transparent or solid stain chosen for how the surface is used and how exposed it is.

What's included

  • Wash and brighten to strip gray, mildew and old failing finish
  • Wood left to dry to the right moisture level before any stain goes on
  • Board, railing and fastener repairs before staining
  • Semi-transparent or solid stain matched to the wood and exposure
  • Railings, spindles, gates and posts cut in by hand
  • Decks sprayed and back-brushed so the stain penetrates
  • Plants, siding and hardware protected; cleaned up daily

Common questions

How much does it cost to stain a deck or fence in Pierce County?

Most decks run $900 to $2,500 depending on size, railing footage and how much cleaning and repair the wood needs; a typical residential fence runs $3 to $7 a linear foot. Railings and spindles are the slow, detailed part, so a deck with a lot of railing costs more than its floor area suggests.

Semi-transparent or solid stain — which should I pick?

Semi-transparent shows the wood grain and is easy to recoat, but needs redoing more often. Solid hides the grain, lasts longer and covers older, weathered wood better. We'll recommend based on the wood's condition and how much sun and rain it takes.

How often does a deck need re-staining here?

Horizontal deck boards take the most water and sun and usually need a recoat every two to three years; fences and vertical surfaces go longer, often four to six. Washing it each spring is the cheapest way to stretch that.

Can you stain a brand-new deck or fence?

New pressure-treated wood usually has to weather and dry for a few weeks to a few months before it will take stain. We'll check the moisture and tell you whether it's ready or worth waiting.
